She wonders if is it possible for a non-noble material, like steel wire, to ever become precious? When combined with a precious material like silver, does it become precious itself? Has the jeweller the ability to redefine what theatrically cannot be redefined?

So, “My Precious Voltaic Mood” results of a series of jewellery pieces made of sterling silver (a noble material) and plastified steel wire (a material everyone can find in any do-it-yourself store). In the end, tradition is mixed with the ordinary, resulting in innovation.

Above all, with this collection, Ana tries to defy the limits between what is esteemed and what people do not value. So, in a certain way, she alerts to the seduction effects that noble materials have on men, who sometimes neglect the quality of the design on behalf of the luxury material features.

Truncum
byMarta Pinto Ribeiro | Contemporary Jewellery

Marta Pinto Ribeiro creates contemporary jewellery which reflects a special interest in volumes, textures, asymmetries or contrasts, influenced by her graduation as a sculptress.

From a prismatic object, where volume and shape defines its presence, comes up "Truncum" – a bulk from which happens various transformations of itself. "Truncum" is the main structural element of all collection, which assumes is sculptural character for itself or in conjugation with its variations. I find that, somehow, their work connect, is inspired or eventually relates to architecture, not only in formal term but also in the creative process.

For instance, in Demitra Thomloudis’ jewellery you will be able to discovery architectural aesthetics, construction, material, landscape and even urbanism. Her work is very much influenced by “vernacular architecture and landscape of site-specific locations”. (1) I find it dazzling and specially love the way she (re)interpret all these concepts and then, in a very particular way, employs them to jewellery pieces that are worn by a human body. As she states:

“Our bodies perpetually occupy the built environment. My work attempts to reverse these roles and interactions by allowing the visual language found within constructed spaces an opportunity to intimately coexist and inhabit the body. I examine and challenge formal architectural organization and its materials in an attempt to redefine and elevate its presence within the construct of jewelry.” (2)

You fell like each piece really has the ability to get the user closer to its environment and the time he/she lives on. As the artist says:

“I live in Athens and ever since I remember myself I see around remains of past times. Abandoned, crumbling buildings falling apart; the marks of time on them; yet, alive. They have plenty of stories to tell; you only have to keep quiet and listen. Their roofs are sinking little by little. They end up bare, naked with their beams out there; with nothing to hide anymore. Just standing there, exposed and unprotected. Within them, trees grow.

And they keep on existing and so do we; as if in parallel lives…Life in Athens seems like falling apart. Its people are also naked and unprotected. Dreams, desires, loves, passions falling apart. Who knows, though, maybe at some point trees will spring up." (3)

This is exactly how I remember Athens: a city that in each corner reminds you that someone, in the past, was passing by or living there. Of course I saw it through a traveler’s eyes. So, I find it really stunning to see how someone who grew up in this specific society structure manages to echo it into jewellery.

Once again, we are looking at a work that defines the time and environment where the artist lives on , but at the same time, is also defined by it.

Living Ruins I, II, III and VI II Copyrights Anastasia Kandaraki

Nicole Polentas chooses narratives to express herself. Her pieces are the result of a beautiful research which "is about the ways in which jewelry objects can initiate an engagement with, and understanding of, cultural place and identity. The multiplicity of identity is examined, reconfigured and reimagined on a visceral level. Jewelry becomes the space in which new associations emerge as the impetus for complex reconstruction. The body of work investigates how culture, gender and ethnicity are experienced through composite narratives of time and place. A narrative approach is applied analytically to the construction of artefact, in order to reflect, interpret and reinvent experience.” (4)

It is such a beautiful and intense work! As she explains:

“I hammer on round metal wire, to give it the shape I want. The resilience the metal thus acquires, allows me to omit all added-on hanging closures or security devices, in order for the overall design to take over these functions.

No part of the wire remains unworked, so that the light may travel upon and be reflected by the surfaces created through the hammering.

If the metal resists, I have to change the initial design. Through this intense interaction, my jewelry and other objects come into being.”(5)

So, Corinna’s pieces may seem simple at first, nevertheless, after closer examination, you realize how carefully they have been constructed. She manages to play with curves, curls and spirals as if lines could fly in order to create light and delicate wearable sculptures. She does not fear the material limitations, instead she challenges them and even takes advantage of its elasticity to find functional solutions.

Moreover, on her pieces, you can grasp scratches and dents that the hammer had left on the metal, while she was working on the anvil. On the one hand, this bring to mind that Corinna’s jewellery is handmade and not factory-produced. On the other hand, it also remind us that, for the jeweler, the working process is as important as the final result.

II Jewellery and copyrights by Corinna CoutouziII

So as you can, the Athens Jewellery week 2016really looks promising! But then, not entirely convinced by my answer, I decided to do a little research and see what others have to say about this intriguing color.

Do Ho Suh Blueprint (2010) II Venice Architecture Biennale

IIPhoto credit: Ana Bragança

I learnt a few interesting things. For instance, didyou know that the word “blue” did not exist in ancients cultures expect in the Egyptian? Or, were you aware that, for ages, blue was so expensive to produce that was considered a wealthy color? Or even that in The Renaissance people referred to blue as “ultramarine”?

Its history is delightful, and if you fell like reading some articles that talk about it, and inclusively explain why blue has been more valorized in modern times, here are some websites:True Blue, Why blue is the costliest colour; The colour of Technolofy Egyptiona Blue.

Instalation by Felice VariniII Orangerie du cha‰teau de Versailles (2006) II

II Photo credit: Ana Bragança

Of course that then there are the emotions that each colour transmits, as it affects us in a physiological and psychological way. For instance, Le Corbusier used to say that colour stimulates our senses, so he used to assign colour to "specific functions: to enhance the perception of depth or weight, to create inviting atmospheres, to create unity, among others. (…) For Le Corbusier, color selection was a material-based, functional consideration."(1) It might seem paradoxal, but he used to paint a room with this colour to give it light; as it vibrates in the shadow. Moreover, he often reinforced the power of blue by contrasting it with other colors like red or white.

Pic 1.
Room in Villa Savoye (1928), Le Corbusier II Photo credit by: ELLE Decoration Magazine

Pic2. Le Corbusier's Apartment in Paris II Photo credit by: Architeizer

So, ultimately, when I re-look at my jewellery inspiration pics, somehow I link them to these "architectural lessons”. For example, take a look at the jewellery pieces from the Emptiness Collection of
Burcu Sülek
or from the In and Out CollectionofCleopatra Cosulet.First of all, the deep blue definitely elicits strong emotions. It gives their work character, presence and in the end each piece is a strong statement. Moreover, this specific blue helps to enhance their jewellery pieces's form, either organic or sharp. And the outcome of the contrast between these blue bodies and the metal tones is just exquisite!!!

Photos credit II Burcu Sülek; Emptiness Collection

II Burcu Sülek instagram: @burcusulekjewelryII

Photos credit IICleopatra Cosulet ; In and out collection

II Cleopatra Cosulet instagram: @cleopatracosuletII

I cannot end this post without showing you, once again, some exemples of my favorite jeweller: Michael Becker. I am a concept, a project, a message, a structure, a material. I’m even the echo of my designer’s background, intensions, and strong feelings. But do people see all this when they look at me?

There are different kinds of people: those who see me; those who look but don’t see me; and those who simply ignore my existence as they are looking for something else. My favorite ones, of course, are those who stare at me. In those moments, I fell intimidated but proud at the same time, cause I got their attention for more than 5 seconds. Do you know what I mean? They are staring at me and not at these jewellery fellows who are standing right next to me.

Sometimes these humans are even bold enough to pick me and do what they call “try it on”. Those are the rare moments I can see my reflection on the mirror. I see my geometric shape, my clean and straight lines, my sharp design, my textures, my shinning… I even see my designer and her story!

In the meanwhile, these people talk about me and use terms like contemporary, minimalist, architectural. But am I really all that? Are these definitions the most important about me? Maybe they are! Maybe they aren’t… One thing is for sure, I look at the mirror and I dream. I wonder if this is the moment I will start exploring a new world, with a new person who finally seems to perceive that I am more than a dictionary definition or complicated terms.

So what am I?

I am a story. We were both architects, so I knew this kind of neighborhood would please her.

While we were wondering around, I perceive a small contemporary jewellery shop. In display, a collection called "Maps of my Life". Urbanism and jewellery came together and, as an architect, I simply loved it!

Once we got in, we met Kalliopi Andrikopoulou (the jewellery designer) and Katerina Latoufi (also an architect, who is responsible for the design courses in the jewellery seminars). At the time, the jeweler explained us more about her collections, perceptions and jewellery researches. I immediately sympathized with both of them and simply could not take my eyes off those "Maps" !

These pieces had everything I loved. They were minimalist, geometric, they played with perspective, scales and proportions. But above all, I found them poetic.

The streets we pass through every day make part of our history, our path and even our identity. Sometimes we do not recall its name, but for sure we all remember how is the street where we were born, went to school, got our first job or even fallen in love… So, for me, this collection symbolized, not only locations in a map, but also living moments and stories. Kalliopi had managed to have architecture, urbanism, poetry and jewellery, all in one piece. This amazed me.

I met a great jeweler by chance and the direction of my path changed.

The following week, I enrolled into the Syn Apeiro's jewellery workshops, having Kalliopi has my teacher. Isn't it much more interesting if I create a platform where I can share it with you an eventually receive your feedback?

So to begin with, I have to establish some boundaries. Nowadays the universe of contemporary jewellery is so vast that without limits I might get lost…

Therefore, my rule is: all the posts I will share will have to, somehow, talk about
Jewellery & Architecture.
It may be how one influences the other; the techniques and design processes they might share; about former architects who now are jewelers or vice-versa... Who know? But this is my rule!

You might ask why Jewellery & Architecture. Well, the main and obvious reason is that I am a former architect who recently has decided to concentrate exclusively on her passion: jewellery design. Consequently, these two art fields make part of my life, my work, my everyday. But also because I have noticed that often it is very easy to find articles that talk about these two fields, but not blogs who concentrate their content exclusively on them.

Who knows how long this blog will last? But one thing is for sure; if you are reading it right now it means that you and I have something in common! That, for me, is already a very good sign!

So let's keep in touch. Text me, write me about your ideas, you can even submit your work! I will be glad to share it on my blog. Just remember:
Jewellery & Architecture.

Ana Bragança @ AUTOR14

It was with an enormous pleasure that I took part of the 14th International Contemporary Jewellery Fair AUTOR, in Bucharest.
